Jon’s gardening tips and planting guides for spring
Lavenders are looking great and are one of the best early signs of spring in Perth.
There are many new and interesting varieties and colours of lavender, from the best-known purple to pink and even white.
Fluffy flowers and dwarf bushy varieties mean more colour and best of all, there is no need to prune lavender plants to keep them in shape!
Our lavender planting tips include using clusters of different colours along borders. They are hardy in many decent soil types.
To have a productive garden, consider planting fruit trees. Swan Valley Station has good stocks available of stone fruit, apple and mulberry trees, as well as blueberry bushes.
Get ready for summer with table grape and passionfruit vines that always look great creeping up pergolas and patios.

Citrus trees are among the hardiest and easiest to grow plants available and come in many varieties. If you don’t have a big backyard, dwarf citrus plants are available and ideal for pots on patios.
Cumquats are a great addition to any garden and grow well in tubs. They are decorative as well as a great source of food and Vitamin C. Try the Nagami variety, eaten skin and all; they are delicious and different. If you end up with too many, they also make great jam.
Spring citrus tree care is important, so ensure all citrus are planted or located in a sunny spot, in well-drained soil.
Now is an excellent time to feed your citrus and the whole garden in readiness for warmer days and abundant growth.
We recommend all-purpose Troforte slow-release fertiliser. One application of this will feed your garden through to January 2026!
Troforte general-purpose fertiliser is available in 1kg and 3.5kg containers as well as a 10kg tub that will feed an entire big garden.
It is great for citrus, fruit trees, shrubs, flowers, perennials and even natives.
With a slow-release product like Troforte you can feed your plants slowly, safely and consistently over a five-to-six-month release time.
Have fun in the garden!
